The first Thanksgiving was a testament to the idea of Divine Providence, which is the idea that God has a vested interest in the cause of man’s liberty and actively intervenes in those human actions that forward the cause of liberty. The pilgrims who celebrated it recognized the hand of Divine Providence in the form of their friend and the savior of the colony, Squanto. The indirect path that led Squanto to be a guide for the Pilgrims included his being saved by Christian missionaries and converted to the gospel of Christ, salvation from a plague that killed his entire tribe, and led him back to the very shores he had been taken from.
When the Pilgrims celebrated their first large harvest, recognizing that God had not only led them to this promised land of America, but had given them the fellowship of the natives which was sorely needed for survival, they invited all their neighbors to share in a feast of Thanksgiving to God. They recognized that those blessings were not theirs alone, but to all good people whom their Father in Heaven wished to bestow the blessings of Liberty on.
These ideas, this gratitude (and as important, the act of thanksgiving), lasted for generations. That gratitude brought more blessings and enabled our Founding Father’s to not only recognize Divine Providence in their own lives, but seek after it for the entire nation. They realized, as the Pilgrims did, that the blessings of Divine Providence took long hard years of diligent work and fervent worship. Trusting in God to fulfill his promises if they continued their Good Works, Industry and Worship, they kept an eye single to His cause: Liberty, the blessings of which have been felt around the world for nearly two hundred years without a pause.
It is my hope that we can return to those ideas–to learn them, teach them, and live them, as our ancestors did (because everyone in America is entitled to be counted as progeny of the Pilgrims). May our work continue in His name and for His purpose.
