American Values – Industry (diligencia)

Industry, in the context we will be addressing it, according to Mirriam Webster’s Dictionary is:

1. diligence in an employment or pursuit; especially : steady or habitual effort
2. systematic labor especially for some useful purpose or the creation of something of value

All Early American colonists struggled.  English colonies without the leadership of a strong military presence or fervent clergy failed, outright in the early years (17th century). Colonies with strong religious leaders and values succeeded even without a strong military presence.

As the differences between colonies success and failure became clearer, hard work–industry–became an American Value out of necessity.  But it was the biblical teachings that indicated God admired and rewarded hard work that kept our colonial ancestors working without any immediate rewards.  Their industry, they knew, might not lead to a better life for themselves, but they believed, and were indeed vindicated, that their legacy of faith and hard work would leave a lasting wealth for their progeny.

We are still reaping the benefits of their industry today, though many of us have forgotten and become ambivalent, or even mocking, of the religious values that have provided the soft, prosperous life that we all, as Americans, enjoy.  Given our current wealth, how much better would our children and their children be if we lived and taught the value of industry today?  How much better would our progeny be if we could delay our own gratification while working hard to improve our circumstances through industry and religious fervor?  Would our legacy be as long lasting as the Pilgrims and Puritans that first landed on the shores of America?

This Thanksgiving, let us dedicate ourselves to reliving the legacy of our Pilgrim Ancestors. Let us honor them by renewing the honored tradition of Industry. Let us work hard for no reward of our own, but for the legacy of prosperity and faith we will leave to our children.
